Stua | New Design Classics

STUA is an award winning, family owned furniture design and manufacturing company based in San Sebastian, Spain. Founded in 1983 by Jesús Gasca, who is also the principal designer, STUA offers a contemporary collection based on chairs, tables, stools, storage, lounge and outdoor furniture. These are equally at home in a residential or commercial setting.

"A small collection of design created to last" - What separates STUA furniture from other contemporary design furniture brands is the enduring nature of form. The company is not frivolous - it only has a small collection of furniture that is very coherent. Any new piece has to enrich and complement their existing collection.  The Gasca family attribute this attention to detail on the memories of Jesús Gasca's mother who was a model for fashion designer Balenciaga. When refining his designs Balenciaga used to say that the "detail must be in the back".  STUA has extrapolated this to the design and aesthetic appeal of their furniture, particularly their chairs.

STUA's timeless designs are conceived and executed at an extraordinarily high level of aesthetic and engineering detail. The work is innovative and original - the company is always searching for new materials to apply to new designs. There is a fresh spirit to the work, but its character is grounded firmly in the principles and character of classic modern design, that of simplicity and timelessness.

Aesthetics are important but the functionality of the piece is of the utmost importance. For Jesus Gasca a chair has to be comfortable, otherwise it can't be called a chair. STUA's creative process and adherence to specific design principles results in products which are very simple in form but elaborate in their design.

Although a small company, STUA has achieved global success, with many of its products found in some of the most recognised and inspiring architectural and design spaces in the world, including the NY Guggenheim Museum, the Delft Royal Dutch Cathedral and commercial spaces such as Google, Pixar and "The Island" in Paris, the new global headquarters of drinks giant Pernod Ricard.

"Lasting designs for a sustainable world" - In relation to sustainability, they believe their focus on creating a small collection of simple, stylish furniture items which truly fulfill their remit both in terms of aesthetics and design functionality, is truly contributing to the ecological crisis our world faces.  The company believes in conscious consumption and creating furniture which is designed to last and positively impacts on peoples lives - timeless, classic designs that are loved for their comfort and versatility and in this sense, they are sustainable primarily because of their durability.

As owners of STUA products ourselves, we can vouch for their quality and durability and we are very proud to be working with such a successful, globally recognised Spanish brand.
